The film tops our list of best James Bond movies because it’s widely said to be the film where the character James Bond really comes into his own. What more, it has one of the flashiest of the Bond villains Auric Goldfinger, hence the title.
The longest movie franchise of all time with some great entries and some failures as well as lots of women, weapons, alcohol, vehicles, locations and villains. Bond is our favorite martini-drinking ass-kicking world-saving British secret agent. And after 53 years, 6 actors and 24 films, it's time to rank 'em. According to critical acclaim, cult following, fan appreciation, watchability and quality.

'Dr. No' and 'From Russia with Love' were very good movies, granted. But there's a massive difference between those films and the ones after 'Goldfinger'. Before it, nobody knew that Bond could be as big as in this film. Bond turned into action. 'Goldfinger' is by far the best James Bond film there is, both as movie in itself and as Bond entry. Everything fits perfectly. It is a great spy thriller, with an awesome and memorable villain. The final sequence is excellent and the movie is very entertaining overall. 'Goldfinger' would lead the way for such films as 'You Only Live Twice' or 'The Spy Who Loved Me' to be as big as they were. Bond is in his prime, Connery is not very young, nor very old, he seems to be enjoying himself and it's the highest point in the original trilogy. Even after 'Goldfinger', such fun films as 'Thunderball' seemed mediocre. 'Goldfinger' is a time capsule of the '60s, a franchise starter for James Bond, a character definer entry, a beautifully thought out script, an extremely fun experience, an unpretentious execution, a success, an example and the best James Bond film of all time, hands down.

After 'Die Another Day', there could be no better way to reboot Bond but 'Casino Royale'. Whoever had the idea of remaking the character as a dark, psychopathic tough gentleman based on the first book had a million dollar idea. Craig's Bond is not a perfect Bond and it is shocking to see him in comparison to Connery's or Moore's, but it was a breath of fresh air to watch such awesome stunts, beautiful atmosphere, excellent plot development. Some would take as a disrespect to watch Bond answer 'Do I look like I give a damn?' to the bartender, but it is a statement that the times are changing and we should seek out for new ideas. From the moment the film starts, to when it ends it feels like a rollercoaster of action cocktail. 'Casino Royale' might seem like an attempt to turn Bond into 'Mission: Impossible'. And 'Quantum of Solace' showed us that, but Craig's Bond couldn't have had a more perfect film to start and, Bond or not, it is nothing more than an excellent movie, period.

It's useful to note how much the Hitchcock catalogue influenced early Bond, specially 'North by Northwest', which is what I think this film is trying to homage. 'From Russia with Love' is probably the least grandiloquent Bond ever. It gave us something that Bond fans have been asking for and have never been given for decades now: a proper down to earth Fleming's Bond. 'From Russia with Love' is a spy thriller, is not an action movie of any kind. The dialogue is more important than the stunts (if there are any), the plot is more important than the settings and the characters are more important than the outfits. Moore could learn a thing or two from this film. Some people will come out disappointed because they were waiting for an exploding Bond adventure, but 'From Russia with Love' is the perfect secret agent film, before 'Goldfinger' came around to change everything. Proper introduction to Blofeld, great villain from Robert Shaw and an excellent, memorable and sexy Bond girl as Tatiana Romanova was; great chemistry.

'Skyfall' is a different Bond film. Following Craig's tradition of giving depth to the character of James Bond, 'Skyfall' might just be one of the finest most human portrayals of Bond. It would certainly be boring for every film to be as depressing, but such a harsh take on the character is very refreshing somehow. Giving an important role to M and an interesting villain as Silva, 'Skyfall' is the right answer to a disaster as it was 'Quantum of Solace'. The action sequences are excellent, as a standard action movie, the ending is encouraging and it really is a great way to make honor to the imperfect character of Ian Fleming's novel. The truth is that it might get humdrum at times and it feels a bit too long, but with a very decided project, 'Skyfall' was a redeemer for Craig, for Bond and for Fleming. It tied up loose ends and answered questions that some of us didn't know we where interested in. Awesome theme song, good plot; it's not as fun as some old school films, but it's a vastly better product.

The only reason why probably people bashed on 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' is because of the actor change. George Lazenby wasn't even bad, it's just that it wasn't Connery. If Connery had made this film, it would be regarded as his all time masterpiece. 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' is a weird entry in the series. The psychedelic take on the saga made the movie very much recognizable. It is very different from anything else. It was directed by Peter R. Hunt, who didn't directed any other Bond film, James Bond actually falls in love and gets married, Blofeld is played by Telly Savalas. All this added up to a final product that was way better than it had any right to be. The adventure is fun, is creative, is different. It feels like a Bond film despite all the changes and it was way better than the following 'Diamonds Are Forever'. Lazenby made a two hour and a half Bond film in the snow with excellent sequences and an engaging story in his first and only movie. This never happened to the other fella.

Before any of the crazy adventures Bond went through with Moore, Connery once had a meeting with Dr. No. 'Dr. No' was the first Bond film and a perfect way to both start the saga and represent the '60s. The film is a great spy adventure that is also deluded enough to be a proper Bond. Honey Ryder is one of the best Bond girls there is and an example to follow in the rest of the movies, only to be matched by Tatiana in 'From Russia with Love', Tracy in 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and Agent XXX in 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. The first Bond adventure starts off very slowly but in time gets to a conclusion in the Crab Key island. 'Dr. No' is the best way to start the franchise and the share presentation of the character is already extremely iconic until the ending. The first hour of the film is sort of slow, the villain isn't all that menacing and some scenes are quite dated, but 'Dr. No' is a reminder of Bond basics: the girl, the island, the villain, the plot. Everything is there, in a pilot form. 'Dr. No' is an incredible film for its time and a perfect starting point.

Would you ever believed me if I told you Brosnan made an excellent film? After such meh film as 'The Living Daylights' and 'Licence to Kill', 'GoldenEye' was a true revelation of what the '90s were capable to do with Bond. 'GoldenEye' is a very silly plot, with very silly logic, with a very silly script. But it's extremely fun, recognizable and re-watchable. It is often quoted as one of the best Bond movies and it truly carries mostly everything good about the modern Bond films. When comparing it with some of the best old entries, is a very tough decision to make and, let's face it, 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and 'GoldenEye' will never match up with the clever plots of 'Dr. No' and 'From Russia with Love', but their grandiloquence, while unbelievable, it's welcome, and 'GoldenEye' is an awesome reminder of that.

If ever considering watching only one film from Moore, 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is a given. While the Moore era was certainly characteristic and very fun itself, there was always a lack of confidence in the plots, a lack of sense of style in the execution that would lead to terrible films like 'A View to a Kill' or 'Moonraker' and to mediocre ones like 'Live and Let Die', but 'The Spy Who Loved Me' is a whole other world. The film is very determined, the plot is engaging and the action sequences are great. It's hard to think of a more memorable girl than Agent XXX and a more memorable villain than Jaws. The film can't save itself though from the silliness of the '70s phenomenon. And it will never be at the height of the Connery 'golden years' (see what I did there?), but is an enjoyable Bond film, a true fun experience with tiny flops here and there.

It should be called 'Bond Under Water'. 'Thunderball' is a true classic of the Connery era. Most of the film is not particularly memorable, but when watching it, it is one of those Bond films that as the story evolves, you actually care about the outcome, you actually care about the plot. Something the Moore films never quite achieved, except probably for 'The Man with the Golden Gun'. 'Thunderball' is one heck of a ride. It doesn't have as much action as other Bond movies, but the conversations that carry the story are good. There's a certain awareness of what the film wants to be, which, after 'Thunderball', stopped happening in the Bond films. Is not like it's that important for an action-spy movie, but it's nice to have a little coherence once in a while. The only crime 'Thunderball' ever committed was its lousy dated special effects near the ending, the boring middle part and coming after such a film as 'Goldfinger'. It was a tough act to follow that stood for itself nonetheless.

From the first five films, 'You Only Live Twice' is probably the least good. But the first five films are spy masterpieces of the '60s. The film is entertaining, original and pleasant to sit through. Though it doesn't make much justice to its previous films and even the plot can get a little ridiculous when thinking about it. Connery was doing the part now as a sport and not really feeling it anymore and it's noticeable. 'You Only Live Twice' can be a let down after such films as 'Thunderball' and 'Goldfinger', but starting off with a space satelite eaten by a space ship, Bond dying followed by Nancy Sinatra on the Opening credits and ending with Blofeld's base blowing up makes it a required viewing in the James Bond experience. Bond goes sniper sociopath, still with class and elegance, Timothy Dalton in the lead role. It could've been much much worse. 'The Living Daylights' is a film easily confused with 'Licence to Kill', hell, with Moore's films, even. But, when taking a closer look, it actually has a lot to offer, inside the 'mediocre films' of the Bond franchise. Dalton's first outing is greatly executed. The locations feel fresh, the story feels original and the sequences are fun, especially the one with the car on ice. The ending in Afghanistan is pretty passable. There are better films, sure, but from the catalogue of forgettable entries, 'The Living Daylights' is the certified best of the bunch.

The only reason people forget to mention 'For Your Eyes Only' is because 'The Spy Who Loved Me' exists. This film is not that memorable, but the truth is that is one of the best Moore's there are. As a film is maybe not all that awesome. And despite preferring Connery or Moore as Bonds, people often forget how many good films Connery has in comparison to Moore, which makes his catalogue be 'The Spy Who Loved Me' and the rest of the trash. But in between stands 'For Your Eyes Only'. It may not be a big deal when watching it, but when remembering it, it is actually pretty entertaining and enjoyable despite its simplicity. It starts off good with the helicopter scene, a bunch of forgettable stuff happens, then he skies in a chase, a bunch of boring conversation, then he climbs dangerously in a well made scene, film ends. Timothy Dalton will always have the curse of being the most average Bond in the saga's history. He never made an awful film, but he never made a striking entry. An even if he did the latter, it was probably 'The Living Daylights'. 'Licence to Kill' is not very memorable, but it could be said it's one thing: original. And also a new take on Bond. Dalton's performance is ok, but the concept of a gritty Bond was nicely executed and at the end made a decent film. But 'Licence to Kill' lacks its own essence. The film only proves that it was time for the '90s to arrive, because Dalton seemed like a confused mix between Moore and Brosnan. The movie feels sort of lost, but the sequences are ultimately enjoyable and nobody really is mad for this film existing, so... enjoy yourself watching it!

'Live and Let Die' is, at its core, the default Bond film, ever. It's not very good, not very bad, and it contains everything necessary to be a Bond film that can be called Bond film. It would partially raised the bar for the Moore era films to get made in the way they did, but it doesn't quite get thru, like a little sister to 'The Spy Who Loved Me'. 'Live and Let Die' contains a boat chase that would be imitated in 'The Man with the Golden Gun' and a villain obsessed with sharks that would later be imitated in 'Licence to Kill'. This film has by far one of the best, if not the best, theme songs of the entire saga, composed by McCartney, so that's a plus. There are weak spots, although. Mainly the plot takes a long time to start working and the showdown doesn't seem worth it, truly. Also, some have criticized its racial portrait as being sort of negative towards black characters. But 'Live and Let Die' is now a classic in the saga, yet not quite there yet as an outstanding Bond.

'The Man with the Golden Gun' is by most standards a bad Bond film. The story is dumb, there is a lack of style, of focus, of originality and the film appears to be much more than it really is. But it has more redeemable qualities than 'A View to a Kill', for example. Christopher Lee makes an incredible villain as Scaramanga, there is a good car chase scene, Moore is having fun it seems and the island in which the intro and showdown take place is very original. 'The Man with the Golden Gun' is a piece of crap with pearls spread all over it, so it is worth the wait. A movie as bad as its theme song, yet as catchy, and a guilty pleasure for some. 'Spectre' for Daniel Craig standards is pretty mediocre. The film feels concentrated yet too heavy. I believe it's the longest James Bond, near 2 hours and a half, and by the end is not enjoyable anymore. It has some good things like some action sequences and some dialogue, but mostly is an exhausting experience. Way more than a Bond film should be. It's just very very boring by the time even the main villain appears. 'Spectre' strikes with incredibly predictable outcomes, uninspired and clichéd storyline and an astonishing amount of time wasted in boring and unnecessary plot development. It's also noticeable that at least 'Spectre' redeems the Craig Bond from being too different by compensating with a story that would fit in an old entry. While 'Casino Royale', 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Skyfall' were concentrating in modern interpretations of Bond, 'Spectre' goes back to the roots and gives us an old school plot to satisfy that need. There is a nice feeling of knowing that Moore would've gone on an adventure like that. Nice homage, in a way, but still too long and somewhat dull. Disappointing after 'Skyfall', also.

'Moonraker' is fun. In a sort of very bad way, but it finds its ways to surprise the eye. Is the least serious film in the whole franchise. The Bond franchise. It must be hard to be the least serious Bond. 'Moonraker' is in space (actual sci-fi), unlike anything else from Bond, and it goes completely off the rails with the second Jaws appearance, now getting a girlfriend. Just the stupidest stuff. Moore is charming, as always, but that doesn't divert from the extremely ridiculous plot, development, fight scenes, chase scenes, sci-fi scenes, characters, villains, concepts and dialogue. It's really disheartening to see that a film with such low standards of quality and style, a sell-off, can make so much in the box-office. 'Moonraker' is a fun film to review and maybe to laugh at, but it really is dangerous if every film is going to imitate it. 'Moonraker' is a negative spot. But some people dig it, somehow.

In between the slow cliché start and the slow cliché ending, as well as forgettable Bond girl and villain, there is a great bike chase scene and that's kind of it. Some can handle a silly Bond, some can handle a talkie Bond. What some can't handle is a pretentious Bond. Limitlessly and shamelessly pretentious Bond. It is better for Craig to interpret this side of Bond, he has the straight face. But nobody really wants to see that. The plot is incomprehensible, maybe because in the bottom is stupid. 'Quantum of Solace' is not a Bond film, is not a fun film. It's a politically charged story about the dark side of an alcoholic, sociopathic secret agent. Roger Moore would shoot himself if ever given that script. It doesn't even have Q or Moneypenny, like they're trying to Bourne Bond. The action sequences are well executed and somewhat exciting, having that 'Casino Royal' echo, and at least is not long. But ultimately it let everybody down and as exciting as it can get, it never ever has fun with itself. Daniel Craig kind of walks with that load on his shoulders of being so tough and not being a rogue Bond; and 'Quantum of Solace' is the worst representation of that.

By the point 'Octopussy' appeared, it was reasonable to believe they were running out of ideas. The plot seems fine, is just something about the execution that it's not. The entire film is just a long conversation and a shotgun persecution until Bond dresses up as a clown and then gets up on a plane. Yes, it's that ridiculous. There's your usual catalogue of Bond vehicles, there's a car, a train, a plane, so it is kind of interesting sometimes. But the direction does nothing for the adventure to be as fun as it should be. If 'Moonraker' was Star Wars Bond, 'Octopussy' didn't learn the lesson and did Indiana Jones Bond. Nothing happens for like an hour in the middle and the plot is impossible to remember. It's not as disrespectful as 'Die Another Day', the San Francisco bridge ending is clever, Christopher Walken has fun playing the villain and overall is another Moore film, but nobody can handle the boredom of some scenes that go forever. It is sort of entertaining at some point, I'll grant you that, but the only idea that this movie forms part of the cannon makes Bond fans cringe like there's no tomorrow. From outside, 'Die Another Day' seems forgettable, while the truth is that there's a lot to remember from it, in the worst sense. Madonna's theme song is hideous: a neo-pop techno thing that doesn't sound as glamorous as Bond theme songs should sound. The plot is about the son of a North Korean terrorist that changed his face and wants to canalize the power of the sun for something or something. Halle Berry is in it for some reason, I don't remember, just for her to have a spin-off that never got made. The last outing of Pierce Brosnan in the part, understandably. And the action scenes are boring, very very boring. There's a redeemable sword fight, but that's kind of it. The saga was doing fine with Moore, so they independently made a bad remake and ultimately boring adventure with old Connery Bond. That won't do. One of the worst cash-in attempts of the '80s.

Ok, 'Casino Royale' from '67 is not a proper Bond film, yet, it deserves to be ranked as much as 'Never Say Never Again', at the bottom. Because sincerely, this film most of all, doesn't have any of the qualities that Bond should have. Not even the actor. Who the hell even thought of David Niven for the part? Well, after all, 'Casino Royale' is a pure satire and not even a good one. Everything is sloppy and boring and nobody should even care to watch it in a marathon. It doesn't have anything to do with the essence. And the absence of EON seems obvious beyond belief, unlike 'Never Say Never Again'. 'Casino Royale' is one of the most boring comedies of the '60s and the most wasted talent in cinema history: Orson Welles, Peter Sellers, Woody Allen, I rest my case.
